UTS MENTAL HEALTH AND PERSONAL WELLBEING SERVICES

While studying law is a very rewarding experience, at times the workload can become stressful and challenging. This page contains information on many different support services that UTS and the broader community offers to students - from counselling services to mental health support lines.

MENTAL WELLBEING SERVICES

BATYR: 

Help break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues and change how those with mental health problems are perceived. Programs are available to enable students who have experienced mental ill-health to share their stories with others. These programs are run by Batyr, a non-profit organisation engaged by UTS to help empower and educate young people around mental health.

UTS COUNSELLING SERVICE:

The UTS Counselling Service is open Monday-Friday, five days a week, offering confidential sessions with counsellors. UTS is now offering sessions over Zoom to ensure safe social distancing.

WORKSHOPS AND GROUP COUNSELLING SESSIONS:

From managing exam and assignment stress to workshops on mindfulness and preventing procrastination - the UTS Group Counselling Service has a workshop for everyone. These sessions are currently run over Zoom.

UTS PSYCHOLOGY CLINIC:

The UTS Psychology Clinic is another great resource on offer at UTS. This service offers very affordable private sessions with trained psychologists that are in their final year of training, under the supervision of a registered psychologist. Sessions cost only $12.50 for a concession holder for 60 minutes. For appointment enquiries, please contact the UTS Psychology Clinic by phone or email.

UTS MEDICAL SERVICE:

Affordable and confidential appointments can be made by staff and students with accredited healthcare professionals at The University Health Service. To book an appointment:

room 01.06.001 of Building 1.


Mental Health support or advice and treatment for any health problem can also be attained by visiting your local General Practitioner Doctor (GP). Your GP may complete a Mental Health Care Plan and refer you for free or discounted sessions with a psychologist.

International students residing in Australia can also access this service through their Overseas Student Health Cover. Appointments are available face-to-face or over the phone

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE SERVICES

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: 

UTS offers an in-house Financial Assistance Team to assist students with all sorts of financial needs, including applying for a loan, grants for textbooks, study-related living expenses, technology costs and rental subsidies when living in UTS housing. Book an appointment by calling from Monday-Friday 9:30am-4:30pm on +61 2 9514 1177


Currently all appointments are by phone, with the Financial Assistance staff telephoning you at the time of your scheduled appointment. R U OK? is a harm prevention charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives. LGBTIQA+ SERVICES

TWENTY10 GLCS: 

Twenty10 GLCS Provides a range of support services and social spaces for people of diverse genders, sexualities and sexes in NSW. Services are aimed specifically at people aged under 26. Their website includes methods of accessing support, including housing, and  is full of resources that may be helpful. https://www.twenty10.org.au/ 

QLIFE:  

QLife provides anonymous and free LGBTI peer support and referral for people in Australia wanting to talk about sexuality, identity, gender, bodies, feelings or relationships. We know that sometimes issues with your University experience bleed into other spheres within your life, so it is important that you seek the support you might not know you need. https://qlife.org.au/ 


QUEER COLLECTIVE AT UTS: 

Students can visit the Queer Collective space for peer support on campus, located in Building 5.

UTS ALLY PROGRAM: 

The UTS Ally program creates awareness of issues related to sexual and gender identity, supports the rights of all students and staff regardless of sexual orientation and gender, and supports and celebrates an inclusive, diverse and safe university community, based on respect and dignity.


An Ally is a trained volunteer who provides safe contact for students and staff identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual and intersex, and those questioning their sexual or gender identity.


What do Allies do?

Allies have a special Ally sticker or poster on their office door or on display in their workspace when they are present. Allies have a folder of resources that they can use

to assist people who enquire. They are also a safe person from whom to seek help if you need assistance or believe you may be in danger. Please contact equity@uts.edu.au

ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES

The Accessibility Service is the University’s central contact point for all students living with one or more disabilities, medical or mental health conditions. The Accessibility Service provides assistance and support to access services, and to make requests for assessment arrangements and reasonable adjustments.

STUDENT LEGAL SERVICE

Legal advice is provided on a range of matters including tenancy, employment, traffic and criminal offences, civil matters, consumer claims, debts, family issues, business, and many other areas. The UTSSA Student Legal Service can also certify documents as true copies, and witness statutory declarations and other formal

documents.

The service is run by a solicitor who is assisted by two trainee lawyers. All legal advice is provided by the solicitor and all matters are dealt with in strict confidence.
